Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Expresses Profound Regret Over Loss of Devender Rana

Srinagar, November 5: In a solemn and heartfelt address to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah paid tribute to Devender Rana, expressing deep sorrow over his passing. During the obituary references, Abdullah reflected on his long-standing association with Rana, acknowledging the significant role he played in J&K politics and the National Conference (NC) party before his recent tenure with the BJP.

A Long and Close Association

Opening his remarks, Abdullah, the leader of the House, emphasized the personal and professional bond he shared with Rana. “No one in this House has worked as closely with him as I have,” Abdullah said, describing their collaboration that spanned nearly two decades. Following the 2008 elections, Rana served as Abdullah’s advisor, playing a critical role in the party and the government.

“Rana embraced his responsibilities with dedication, especially when changes were made in the Ministry. He took charge of party duties wholeheartedly and always strived to deliver results,” Abdullah said, noting that even the opposition acknowledged Rana’s commitment.

Hard Work and Dedication to Public Service

Rana’s relentless work ethic and commitment to his duties were highlighted by Abdullah, who said that Rana worked tirelessly, even after joining the BJP. “When he took on multiple roles within the BJP, he fulfilled each with full spirit,” Abdullah noted. Reflecting on his dedication to civic responsibilities, Abdullah also pointed out a notable contribution Rana made to Jammu city: maintaining the Girdhari Lal Dogra roundabout, one of the city’s key intersections. “We have many roundabouts in Jammu, but the one named after Girdhari Lal Dogra stood out due to Rana’s efforts. It was always well-managed because he took personal responsibility for it,” Abdullah explained.

Unspoken Illness and a Missed Opportunity for Reconciliation

With palpable emotion, Abdullah shared his personal regret about not knowing the extent of Rana’s illness. “I was unaware of how unwell he was. Had I known, perhaps we could have worked to mend our differences,” he admitted. Abdullah expressed sadness that his last words about Rana in the Assembly were part of an obituary reference, rather than a conversation of reconciliation. “Destiny had it this way,” he said. “Instead of bridging our differences, I stand here remembering him.”

A Legacy That Will Endure

Abdullah’s words underscored not only a political loss but a personal one. “I only spoke about Devender Rana because his loss will forever haunt me,” he concluded, visibly moved.

In his address, Abdullah underscored Rana’s legacy as a politician who exemplified dedication, hard work, and loyalty. For the members of the Assembly and the people of Jammu and Kashmir, his contributions will be remembered as part of the state’s political history and enduring commitment to public service.
