Restoration of Article 370 Is About Dignity, Not Politics: PDP Legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra

Srinagar, November 4:
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra emphasized on Monday that the restoration of Article 370 is not a matter of political rivalry but a vital issue tied to the dignity and pride of Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking with reporters during the ongoing Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly session, Parra stressed that his push for the resolution was a matter of identity, not opposition politics.

A Legacy Beyond Party Lines

Parra underscored that his proposal to restore Article 370 respects the legacy of J&K’s founding leaders, including Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah and the historical ideals of the region's former Maharaja. “This is beyond politics. It is about honoring the identity and unique status of Jammu and Kashmir that was abrogated on August 5, 2019, by the Parliament of India,” Parra said, adding that the resolution is focused on the aspirations of the people rather than party agendas.

Historic Assembly Session After a Decade

The assembly session, held after a gap of ten years, has given voice to the aspirations of J&K’s people, according to Parra. He highlighted the symbolic significance of the session, where citizens’ hopes for a return to special status are being acknowledged. “People have voted in large numbers, instilling confidence in the government and especially in Chief Minister Omar Abdullah,” Parra remarked.

Call for Unanimous Support on Article 370

Parra’s resolution seeks the reinstatement of Article 370 in its original form, urging lawmakers to rise above party lines and back the resolution. “This isn’t about politics. It’s about the dignity and identity of J&K’s people,” he said, urging the assembly to make Article 370 a priority. Basic issues like infrastructure, water, and employment, he suggested, could take a backseat while the assembly focuses on restoring the rights of the people.

Parra also shared that he requested the Speaker to include the resolution in the agenda of the four-day session. “This should be part of the legislative business, and we hope to gain the National Conference’s support for this resolution,” he added.

Critique of Omar Abdullah’s Approach

Parra expressed disappointment that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah did not prioritize Article 370 in his earlier cabinet discussions. While Abdullah had previously advocated for statehood, he didn’t make similar efforts regarding Article 370. “He didn’t consult with leaders across the spectrum in J&K,” Parra said, suggesting an All-Party Meeting should have been held to convey a united message to Delhi.

Unity Across Political Spectrum on Statehood

While there have been divergent views on Article 370, Parra noted there is a shared demand for statehood among leaders from various parties, including the BJP and the central government. “The Prime Minister, Home Minister, and even Omar Abdullah are aligned on statehood. There’s no disagreement here,” Parra observed, welcoming the commitment to restore statehood.

Assurance of Support to the Government

Parra closed by affirming his party’s support for the current government, assuring that the PDP is committed to fostering a cooperative and conducive environment. “Our President, Mehbooba Ji, has instructed us to ensure that this government functions smoothly,” he stated.

As the assembly session continues, Parra hopes his resolution will gain bipartisan support, underscoring that the move to restore Article 370 goes beyond politics and represents a commitment to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
